Alvin Ailey

On Saturday I went to see the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater at the Fox Theater. It was a last minute decision. It seems like they are here every February, and I have seen them every visit since 1995. I managed to get a ticket to the 8:00pm show. (Lucky for me I don't have a problem going places by myself.)
This performance consisted of material I have never seen before. Heart Song, Treading, Juba, and closed with Revelations. Treading was my favorite. The duet between Linda-Denise-Fisher-Harrell and Clifton Brown was one of the most sensual numbers I have ever seen. I wish I were able to find out the story the choreographer was trying to convey. It begins with a man coming out of the darkness followed by the woman. Their movements gave the feeling of growth and self discovery. Then you see them discover each other and the struggle to maintain what they have.

I always enjoy Revelations. Even though I see it every year , I still get excited during Didn't my Lord Deliver Daniel, Fix me Jesus, Wade in the Water, and Rocka My Soul in the Bosom of Abraham. Revelations is a powerful piece. The combination of blues and gospel music, and the dance takes me on a spiritual journey from being a down and out sinner to the place of the redeemed.

I love this ensemble. My ideal show would consist of Black Milk, Cry, Episodes, Divining, Hymn, Rainbow Round My Shoulders, Treading, Grace, and Revelations. I am sure this will never happen, but if they can record it and place on DVD. I would be one of the first to purchase it.

Words can't describe the company's beauty, style, and grace. I suggest that everyone should treat themselves to the experience if ever given the chance.

If you get a chance to see the Garth Fagan Dance Company, don't miss out. Where Ailey has a long, distinguished history as a classic dance company, Fagan is youthful exuberance in a mix of classic, contemporary and African styles.

Garth Fagan Dance Company will be in Atlanta March 5, 2004 I will be sure to check them out.
